The research activity concerns the study of vascular flora and Mediterranean vegetation. Particular interest is focused on the vegetation of wetlands, both coastal and inland. He investigated the Salicornietea fruticosae class in Sicily and Puglia, the Thero-Salicornietea and Saginetea maritimae class in Puglia, the Lygeo-Stipetea and Querco-Fagetea sylvaticae class in Sicily and the Pegano-Salsoletea class in Italy. He studied the vascular flora, in particular of endemic vascular species of Sicily and some critical taxa of the Mediterranean flora (Seseli tortuosum, Astragalus raphaelis and Bellardiochloa sp. Pl.). He also described some species new to science, such as Helianthemum sicanorum (Torre Manfria, Gela), Astragalus kamarinensis (Pineta Vittoria), Silene kemoniana (Monti Palermo), S. peloritana (Monte Scuderi, Peloritani), S. melitensis (Malta), Bituminaria basaltica (Aeolian), Brassica raimondoi (Castelmola), Vicia brulloi (Antillo, Peloritani), Salix aegaea (Ikaria Island, Gracia), Centaurea phalacrica (Capo Rasocolmo, Messina).
