Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of the biological and chemical characteristics and levels of organisation of living matter. Acquisition of basic knowledge of the structural and functional organisation of the eukaryotic cell and the relationships between the different cell organelles. Acquisition of basic knowledge of embryology.

Detailed Course Content

Cytology: Biological characteristics of living matter. Chemical composition of living matter: water, mineral salts, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids. Notes on the levels of organisation of living matter. The eukaryotic animal cell. The plasma membrane: external coatings and differentiations. The cytoplasm: hyaloplasm, ribosomes; rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (REL); Golgi apparatus; lysosomes; peroxisomes; mitochondria; the cytoskeleton and its constituents; the sphere apparatus. The nucleus and its constituents: the nuclear wall; nucleoplasm and nucleoskeleton; organisation and functions of chromatin; chromosomes and chromosome kit; nucleolus. DNA duplication, transcription and protein synthesis.
