DIVERSITY AND MANAGEMENT OF COASTAL FISHING RESOURCES

Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher: FRANCESCO TIRALONGO

Expected Learning Outcomes

Provide the foundations for understanding coastal ecosystems and biodiversity in relation to the exploitation of biological resources through professional fishing gears. Students should be able to understand the biology and ecology of the main commercially important species, as well as the primary techniques and gears used for their capture. Additionally, they will learn about the concept of overfishing and situations that can negatively impact fishing activities. Furthermore, knowledge will be provided regarding the implementation of resource management with the aim of achieving sustainable exploitation.

Required Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of zoological systematics, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning.

Detailed Course Content

Systematics and identification of the main species of fisheries interest. Analysis of the key biological and ecological aspects of the target species. Sampling techniques and analysis for the study of fisheries resources. Illegal fishing and national and international regulations. Protected and vulnerable species. Conservation and resource management strategies through the establishment and management of marine protected areas and the sustainable use of fishing gear (mesh selectivity, hooks, timing, and methods of use).
