REASERCHER OF EOS SICILY PROJECT
The project focuses on the arrival of humans in Sicily and the dynamics of the first Mediterranean migrations during the Paleolithic period. Using mathematical and ethno-anthropological models, the research aims to explore the province of Syracuse by land and sea to identify new archaeological sites from this era, starting from the reanalysis of known and previously excavated sites.A significant outcome of the research has been the rediscovery, after more than 150 years, of seven semi-submerged caves along the northern coast of Syracuse, following the traces of the renowned Austrian anthropologist Von Adrien. This discovery opens new perspectives on the study of prehistoric human movements and the relationship between ancient populations and the coastal environment of Sicily.

My research focuses on the study of insular faunas of eastern Sicily, with particular attention to the evolutionary and paleoecological dynamics of endemic species. As part of my PhD, I am conducting an in-depth study of Hippopotamus pentlandi von Meyer 1832, the Sicilian dwarf hippopotamus, a key species for understanding the processes of adaptation and insularization of Pleistocene mammals. The investigation of H. pentlandi includes a detailed morphological and biometric analysis of various skeletal components, aimed at clarifying its taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationships with other insular forms. Through the study of skeletal structure, morphological variability, and taphonomic conditions of the specimens, I contribute to the reconstruction of the paleoenvironment in which this species developed and interacted with Sicilian ecosystems.
Alongside my research on insular faunas, I am actively engaged in cataloging and digitizing museum collections at the Paleontology Museum of the University of Catania. My work includes the creation of a museum database that gathers and organizes vertebrate and malacological specimens, with particular reference to Di Geronimo Malacological Collection from Catallarga (CT). This process aims to improve conservation, accessibility, and the usability of the collections, facilitating scientific research and enhancing the paleontological heritage of the university.
