Expected Learning Outcomes

The objectives of the Zoological Museology module are the acquisition of the main concepts used in scientific museology, with particular reference to the main techniques for collecting, preparing and preserving the zoological material, its filing and folder layout and its display. The importance of communication and museum education is also indicated.

Course Structure

Teaching will take place through lectures, fronts and educational workshops. Minimum knowledge of zoological systematics and taxonomy is required. Course attendance is mandatory. If the teaching is given in mixed or remote mode, they can be introduced the necessary changes with respect to what was previously stated, in order to comply the planned program and reported in the syllabus. Learning assessment may also be carried out on line, should the conditions require it.

Required Prerequisites

An average knowledge of systematics and zoological taxonomy is required.

Detailed Course Content

Conservation: Acquisitions. Cataloging. Maintenance and conservation techniques of zoological material. Musealization. Archiving.

Museography. Management of chemical-physical environmental factors. Techniques for setting up the ostensions (thematic showcase, diorama, multimedia, poster design: study of texts, images,
color). Permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions. Public and artifacts safety; intrusion protection. Brief review of the natural "enemies" of organic preparations

Didactics and museum communication, role and value. Historical evolution of teaching. Information and Dissemination: Public and verification of actions, routes, alternative forms, interactions with training agencies, sales points and information brokers. Communication plan for a museum

Research: collection campaigns, study of preserved artifacts, communication strategies. Studies conducted on the public.

History of the naturalistic Museology: the precursors (Egypt, Rome), the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Wunderkammer, the Enlightenment and the first naturalistic museums. The nineteenth century and the great nature trips. The twentieth century and the stasis. The current Italian and international zoological museums.

The historical and psychological reasons at the root of naturalistic collections: collecting; biophilia; the curiosity.
