Francesco Sciuto is associate professor in stratigraphic geology and sedimentology at the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences of the University of Catania since 1992.
His scientific activity is documented by over 160 publications, including 59 articles in international indexed scientific journals. His research focuses on the following topics:
1) Stratigraphic analysis of Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary sequences cropping out in Sicily and North Africa. The main aim of this study is to identify the paleo-environmental characteristics of depositional basins and to reconstruct their spatio-temporal evolution. This is achieved through the analysis of sedimentary facies (textural, structural, and compositional characteristics of sediments) and their micropaleontological content (taxonomic and taphonomic characters of microfossils, mainly ostracods). and define the chronological characters.
2) Study of fossil and present-day ostracod associations of predominantly marine but also continental environments aimed to define both the auto-ecological and sinecological characteristics of individual species or groups of species and their taxonomic characters. This led to the identification and description of several previously unknown taxa.
3) Analysis of the relationships between associations with present-day ostracods and chemical, physical, and sedimentological parameters of the environment. He worked on the superficial coastal habitats of the Mediterranean (Aci Trezza, Central Ionian Sea) and of SE Asia (Thailand), as well as on other non-coastal Mediterranean habitats (Strait of Messina, Strait of Sicily, Northern Ionian).
Prof. Francesco Sciuto:
- took part in oceanographic campaigns in the Mediterranean (Santa Maria di Leuca, Strait of Messina, Strait of Sicily) and in paleoecological surveys on land in different areas of Sicily and Southern Italy more broadly.
- is coordinator of an international scientific cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Bizerte (Tunisia) and the University of Catania (Italy). This agreementwas signed in 2015 and aims to provide a stratigraphic analysis of Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary sequences outcropping in Tunisia and to identify their paleoenvironments.
He has been teaching Quaternary Geology, Sedimentology, Geology since 2003.
