Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding - The educational objective is to provide students with basic knowledge regarding: a) the mineralogical, petrographic, geochemical and petrophysical characteristics of natural and artificial stone materials used in industry and cultural heritage; b) notes on the environmental effects of the use of stone materials

Applying knowledge and understanding - The student will apply to individual categories of stone materials the knowledge acquired regarding their potential use in industry and cultural heritage and their possible effects on the environment.

Making judgements - the student will develop independent judgment in evaluating the potential use of stone materials and the most suitable methodologies for the preparatory analyses for their use

Communication skills and learning skills - will be the subject of the exam test

Specific Competencies

Ability to independently analyze Earth materials in both field and laboratory settings, and todescribe, analyze, document, and report the results.

Ability to apply simple quantitative methods, including geospatial techniques, to Earthsystems.

Ability to define, design, and implement a strategy for solving Earth Science-relatedproblems and to produce a substantial report or thesis.

Ability to provide advice on the use of natural resources in the development of policies,legislation, plans, and programs.

Ability to adopt good professional practices (e.g., legal, safe, responsible, environmentallysound, and sustainable practices).

Rigor in sampling procedures and data collection, as well as in data processing, analysis,and interpretation.

Ability to collect, process, and interpret data from multiple sources using both qualitativeand quantitative approaches.

Basic knowledge of mineralogy and petrography

No prerequisites are required

Detailed Course Content

Course syllabus

Use of lapideous materials in the past and in modern industry

Stone materials in current and historical buildings: employment criteria; methods of extraction and / or cultivation of stone materials.

Alteration, degradation and durability of stone materials

Artificial lapideous materials: archaeological pottery and industrial ceramics. Raw material; the production process; classification and functionality of ceramic products. Archaeometric problems in the study of pottery of archaeological interest. Case studies.

Artificial lapideous materials: Mortars, plasters and wall paints (binders, aggregates and pigments). Classification and petrographic characterization in thin section. Case studies.
