Micropaleontological Stratigraphy

Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: FRANCESCO SCIUTO

Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding: Theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in the field of study.

Knowledge and understanding: Knowledge of the criteria for identifying ostracods within microscopic facies, and recognition of key taxa and their associated habitats and/or paleoenvironments.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Ability to identify ostracods in sedimentary facies from laboratory samples in order to reconstruct paleoenvironments as they evolve through time and space within sedimentary successions.

Required Prerequisites

knowledge of the main transitional and continental marine environments, knowledge of the fundamental notions of paleontology

Detailed Course Content

General information, notes on the soft parts, the carapace and its internal and external structures, development of the organism, ecology and paleoecology, notes on ostracod classification

Textbook Information

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

Verification of learning will take place through an oral exam and practice with recognition of the main taxa of ostracods and the relative facies to which they belong.

Examples of frequently asked questions and / or exercises
