Applied geology

Academic Year 2022/2023 - Teacher: Giovanna PAPPALARDO

Expected Learning Outcomes

The results predict that the students learned the main topics of applied geology, such as:

1. drilling systems for drilling, sampling and water wells.

2. Knowing how to compile a site project.

3. Know the elements of soil geotechnics through the main laboratory tests and in situ tests.

4. Know the main topics of hydrogeology.

5. Know the types of foundations.

6. Understand and evaluate the main geological-technical problems in the design and construction of major works (roads, dams, tunnels).

Course Structure

Generally the teaching takes place through lectures and practical lessons in the classroom, with the support of multimedia material (slides projected during the lessons) and handouts. Mandatory attendance.. The teacher will explain to the students the procedures for calculating some topics of the program. If the teaching is given in a mixed or remote mode, the necessary changes with respect to what was previously stated may be introduced, in order to respect the program envisaged and reported in the syllabus.

Required Prerequisites

Basic principles of chemistry and physics; basic elements of geology; rock recognition; cartography geological, applied geophysics.

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance to lessons is compulsory. For working students, reference is made to the University teaching regulations.

Information for students with disabilities and / or SLD:

To guarantee equal opportunities and in compliance with the laws in force, interested students can ask for a personal interview with the teacher in order to plan any compensatory and / or dispensative measures, depending on the didactic objectives and specific needs. It is also possible to contact the referent teacher CinAP (Center for Active and Participated Integration - Services for Disabilities and / or SLD) of our Department.

Detailed Course Content

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

The final exam consists of an oral test and verification of learning of the topics covered in the practical tests performed during the course.

Verification of learning can also be carried out electronically, depending on health conditions and linked to Covid-19, in compliance with current University provisions.

Examples of frequently asked questions and / or exercises

Geognostic investigations and drilling: drilling systems, geognostic survey, core barrel, undisturbed sample, samplers.

Notions of hydrogeology: hydrological balance, Aquifer types, porosity and permeability; Types of permeability; Darcy's law, source; phases of construction of a well for water; Range test

Soil characterization with in situ tests. CPT and SPT; Scissometric test (VT) Density test in situ; Load test on plate.

Foundations: significant volume of the subsoil; Types of shallow and deep foundations.

Notes on major works: Types and geological problems connected to the construction of roads (in the trenches, halfway up the coast, in the plains, airports and railways), tunnels and dams.
