Geological Survey
Academic Year 2022/2023 - Teacher: Carmelo Giovanni MONACOExpected Learning Outcomes
Acquisition of the ability to carry out geological surveys on field with the recognition of stratigraphic units, tectonic structures and geomorphological elements and with the collection, processing and return of geological data that allow the creation of a scaled geological map, complete with contour elements (legend, stratigraphic columns, geological profiles, Schmidt diagrams) and supported by a geological summary report.
Course Structure
Excursions on field, exercises on geological profiles, (6 CFU, 72 hours, in co-teaching with Prof. Giovanni Barreca).
As a guarantee of equal opportunities and in compliance with current laws, interested students can ask for a personal interview in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, based on their specific needs and on teaching objectives of the discipline. It is also possible to ask the departmental contacts of CInAP (Center for Active and Participatory Inclusion - Services for Disabilities and/or DSAs), in the persons of professor Giorgio De Guidi.
Required Prerequisites
Attendance of Lessons
Detailed Course Content
Activities on field: excursions on filed in a study area of a few square kilometers, with the execution of geological surveys at a scale of 1:10,000, aimed at reconstructing the lithostratigraphic succession and the local structural setting. The collected data will be used for the creation of a geological map.

Learning Assessment
Learning Assessment Procedures
The exam takes place in oral and practical form on topics from the program in order to ascertain the full acquisition of knowledge and the ability to apply it to the topics covered by the course. In particular, the geological elements represented in the map made during the field activity, accompanied by geological profiles and contour elements (legend, stratigraphic diagram, Schmidt diagrams, etc.) and the geological relationship will be discussed.
Criteria for the attribution of the final grade:
The evaluation of the exam will be linked not only to the acquisition of specific knowledge but also to:
• ability to summarize the results; acquisition of independent judgment;
• ability to expose the theoretical basis, the methodological approach and the results achieved with the appropriate use of technical-scientific language.
