Andrea Cannata si è laureato in Scienze Geologiche presso l'Università di Catania. Nel 2004 ha ottenuto il master in Geofisica teorica e applicata presso la “Scuola di Formazione post-laurea della Spezia, Università di Pisa”. Dal 2005 al 2009 ha condotto il dottorato di ricerca in Geodinamica e Sismotettonica presso l'Università di Catania, con la tesi dal titolo “Location and modeling of the magma plumbing system at Mt. Etna by analyzing seismic long period signals”. Nel 2007 è stato visiting scholar presso il Berkeley Seismological Laboratory (USA). Nel 2009-2010 è stato studente PostDoc presso la Sezione di Catania, dell'Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV-OE), Unità Funzionale Sismologia. Nel 2009 ha trascorso due mesi presso il Department of Earth and Space Sciences, Università di Washington (USA), per sviluppare un sistema di monitoraggio dei segnali sismo-vulcanici e infrasonici. Dal 2011 al 2015 ha lavorato come ricercatore per l'INGV-OE, Unità Funzionale Sismologia. Da giugno a luglio 2013 è stato visiting researcher presso il National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED; Tsukuba, Giappone) per studiare i Deep Long Period events registrati sul Monte Fuji. Dal 2015 al 2018 è stato professore associato di Geofisica all'Università di Perugia. Nel 2016-2017 ha trascorso 40 giorni in Antartide con la XXXII spedizione italiana. Dal 2018 ad oggi è stato professore associato di Geofisica all'Università di Catania.

L'attività di ricerca riguarda principalmente l'investigazione dei segnali sismici ed infrasonici registrati in ambiente vulcanico, sia per scopi di ricerca che di monitoraggio, l'integrazione e interpretazione di dati multiparametrici (sismici, geodetici, geochimici, vulcanologici) acquisiti in area vulcanica, lo studio dell'interazione tra sismicità e l'attività vulcanica, l'interferometria noise, i repeating earthquake, l'analisi di serie temporali, le tecniche di signal processing, il machine learning, la sismicità glaciale e il microseism.
